TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR

Opioids might not be worth the risk.

Before you take an opioid, take a moment to ask your doctor or pharmacist:

  1. Am I at risk for addiction?
  2. Will something else work?
  3. How long will I be taking them?
  4. Are you prescribing the lowest possible dose?
  5. What’s the plan to taper me off?

How do Opioids affect your body?

Calendar days of the week

Physical dependence on opioids can happen in as little as seven days. Prolonged use of opioids can lead to addiction, overdose or even death.

How do Opioids affect your body?

Pain can often be better treated with safe alternatives. Some of these treatments may actually work better and have fewer risks and side effects:

  • A combination of acetaminophen (Tylenol®) and ibuprofen (Advil®)
  • Naproxen (Aleve®)
  • Physical Therapy
  • Certain medications that are also used for depression or seizures
  • Interventional therapies (injections)
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy

Use Pharmacy Dropboxes

There are no such things as safe leftovers. About 74 percent of Utahns with an opioid addiction get opioids from a friend or family member. Properly dispose of opioids that are no longer needed in a drop box to lessen the chance of dependence, addiction, and unintentional overdose. Find the nearest drop box at useonlyasdirected.org

We’re all in this together. Our collaborations are united in the effort to prevent opioid misuse, addiction, and overdose deaths.
